KB7QDX | Rating: | 2021-08-23 | | Don't drop one but, definitely buy a few. | Time Owned: more than 12 months. | I've purchased 4 of these radios, iii uv-5r'southward and i bt-5r. They are a winner when you consider feature vs price. Voice feedback and Extremely long battery life are the large pluses with this radio. I've given them to my son's and retain ii myself. All of my other HTs are Yaesu. They are ho-hum to manually program but, with Chirp a cakewalk. For simply $25, one goes into my Get Home Bag and one sits in the basement for my wife during tornado warnings. I'll probably pick upwards one or two more than for gifts or as backup comms for the cars.
K3BR | Rating: | 2021-07-23 | | A new Baofeng UV-5R HT | Time Endemic: 0 to 3 months. | Licensed in the 'lxx's, so I've personally been through alot of gear, including VHF/UHF. I have to give this HT a must have rating. NEVER mind all of the whining and crying re: transmission programming. Sentry a couple of you tubes and patiently follow along, punching keys. You'll become it. If y'all don't, trash your ticket, you don't vest. Information technology works fine although I wouldn't immerse information technology in water or drop information technology on concrete floors. But, if information technology stops working, I shall place it in the round file and become another. For simply $24.00 (that includes tax). 73 es All-time DX de K3BR.

VE5CQ | Rating: | 2020-11-22 | | An Historic Radio | Time Owned: more than 12 months. | More hams on fixed income, retired, close-ins and Handi-Hams have gotten on the air with this one unmarried radio than any other in history. I recently gave an exam to a visually-dumb op, and for a mere $35 he had a radio with voice readout. No 1 can beat that. No one. When a fellow who has spent his life in the dark can go completely practiced with a radio in just a few hours, that counts big! Better however, the radio itself is existence constantly upgraded in terms of both software and circuitry. The first UV-5Rs look the same every bit the new, but take earlier engineering. If you get a fresh/new radio today, it is vastly improved. Intermod and selectivity issues are a thing of the past. You can read the Version number by referencing the instructions...which go more than readable with every upgrade by Baofeng. While not quite equally durable as an Icom 2AT, y'all'd exist surprised how much corruption information technology can take in terms of heat and cold and shock. Ane examiner'south UV-5R was mistakenly left behind in a parked pickup truck all winter in temps as low as -46. When he found it in the jump, the truck wouldn't turn over, but he clicked the UV-5R on and immediately worked the local repeater. Another examiner and I requite them as gifts to new hams, and over the years, they all still work. Many hams officiously suggest ane must spend a lot of money to be a ham. None have yet to print me with their homebrew skills. I personally know hams with acme licenses in numerous countries/languages who are practiced in CW at 45 wpm who only use a UV-5R. Expensive equipment does Not equal operating skill. In fact, nigh lids have the very best equipment, though, thankfully, the reverse is not ever true. I also own some radios by the big names, but tend to use the UV-5R most, thinking if information technology breaks or if I lose it I'm non out much. Problem is, they just continue working. That and the broadcast quality audio take made a surprised convert out of me. 73'south
AB4KA | Rating: | 2020-08-06 | | When you accept to get the cheapest radio possible | Time Owned: more than than 12 months. | I bought this out of morbid curiosity, thinking "for $25, how bad can information technology be?" It works, it's inexpensive and information technology'south a adept back-up (I go on it in my backpack when I become to work so I've got communications if a zombie apocalypse breaks out), only I really wouldn't want information technology every bit my primary rig. The transmit audio is poor and the radio is extremely susceptible intermodulation interference, and it's widely known for having muddied transmitted rf signals (come across the ARRL info on it). I really don't recommend this as a get-go or primary radio, particularly for new hams. Spend a few bucks and become a better radio. HT'south of much meliorate quality aren't all that expensive anymore in the k scheme of things. You tin can exercise improve. A lot better. Recommending these to new hams is doing them a disservice.

KN0JI | Rating: | 2019-12-26 | | This radio changed ham history | Fourth dimension Endemic: more than 12 months. | This little precious stone only puts out 4 watts, only what a powerhouse! Due primarily to its depression toll, but too accompanied by its quality and features, the Baofeng UV-5R has emboldened numerous new hams to become on the air and brand these piddling rigs an integral part of their family unit preparedness plan. Its cost point has placed the radio within the accomplish of many thousands of ham radio operators like no other amateur radio in history. The UV-5R has a flashlight, an FM broadcast radio, alarm, is easy to program manually, and is supported by CHIRP. I have it with me when I'm hiking, camping, or but on a road trip. (Thought I had posted this previously, just I don't come across it, so here it is again, at the take chances of redundancy.)
9W6KGR | Rating: | 2019-12-26 | | It does the job | Time Owned: more 12 months. | In short, this model is clay cheap, and it does the job I want. I am a 4x4 expedition commuter since 2011. Nosotros travelled to some remote parts of Borneo (Malaysia & Indonesia). A reliable handy is compulsory equally we do not want to exist stuck in the center of nowhere. I am also actually particular with the ability of the radios that I used on these trips. I have tested many handy models, including Yaesu FT-270R, FT-4X, Wouxun KG-UV1DP, TYT Th-F8, Baofeng UV-5R and many others. It does the job, in this case, means - high ToT for about 180 secs is not a problem, duplex mode is besides excellent, and the batteries final long too (at least 9-10 simplex hours). I used this model since 2011 and have upgraded the default antenna to Diamond RH951S for better reception and replaced the battery to the one with 3800 mAh (I exercise have similar 4-5 3800 mAh batteries equally backups). Thus far, the model has not yet permit me down terribly. I keep one unit of measurement in my sedan car and one in my spouse'south auto as well.
